CROWDS of
onlookers gathered to watch a century-old tree get the chop on
Sunday.
The large beech tree on the concourse in Harpenden High Street has
been there for generations and scores of schoolchildren have
congregated under it over the years.
But seven years ago it began to show signs of internal decay and
fungal infection and, despite reduction work since then to lengthen
its life, it was decided that it had become too dangerous to remain.
Fifty per cent of the decay was in the base of the tree making it
unsafe and it had to be removed on health-and-safety grounds.
Local contractor High Elms Tree Surgery, which specialises in all
types of tree work and has been in the town for many years, was
called in to fell it.
They began work at 7.30am on Sunday and finished around seven hours
later. A lot of people turned out to watch the work and take
photographs.
Said Shaun Morris, director of High Elms Tree Surgery: "It is a
shame that such a magnificent tree had to be removed. However due to
the decay in the base of the tree, there really was no alternative
in the interest of health and safety. I am told it will be replaced
by another tree in the not-too-distant future.
